Currently there are many options available for online coaching and nutrition programs. Quite honestly I’ve never felt comfortable utilizing this type of service as I’ve always felt that I would need to physically see the person I was working with in order to communicate properly. I trusted my trainer Jeff Ruffin when he recommended that I work with Bernice and I’m extremely thankful that I did.
From day one, Bernice was very active in her communication with me, asking A LOT of questions and really trying to understand me, my eating patterns, and how my body reacted. The biggest items I wanted to address were the following:
- I didn’t want to be skinny fat.
- I wanted to lose fat around my mid section, but NOT lose size.
- Continue to pack on muscle throughout my chest, back, shoulders and arms.
Throughout our time, Bernice has held me accountable by requiring weekly progress pics, updates on weight, and randomly sending a message via email or text to see how I was doing. I’m extremely head strong and focused on goals as an individual, however her check in’s assisted me way more than one would think. (When you’re on a low carb day and just completed fasted cardio, every little bit of encouragement and accountability comes in key!)
Bernice adjusted my diet 3 time throughout my 12 week session. One reason was to help me accomplish my goals, but it also allowed me to not get bored with what I was eating. Also, she shares a lot of great recipes which are delicious. The recipes make it easier to diet and feed other family members as well.
Additional to the items listed above, I want others who are looking into working with Bernice in the future to understand that Bernice went above and beyond for me as a client throughout our 12 weeks. There were down times where I probably would have given up in the past due to frustration, however she was there to listen to me bitch and provide her optimistic, positive outlook. During my time, I lost 17 lbs, drastically lowered body fat, feel great, and ultimately accomplished the goal I set forth for myself during these 12 weeks.
I recently made the decision that I will continue to work with Bernice over the next 20 weeks to prep for my first show and am excited to get to work!

I started my journey 12 weeks ago with Bernice. I had been following her posts on social media and recognized a level of dedication and commitment to a goal that is rarely seen today. I saw a reflection of my former self. I saw her passion for fitness and health, as well as being active in some shape or form. So I decided it was time to get back to who I was. And in making that decision to follow Bernice’s guidance and mentorship I found my way back to myself.
I started week one at my heaviest, 245 pounds. I was depressed, and disgusted by what I allowed myself to become. Her first goal was to establish my baseline fitness levels and rehabilitate lazy eating habits. I will say that it took me a few days to get used to the new taste of things, but I realized that I was tasting food, not preservatives. After the initial shock to my body of being back in a gym, I had more energy and was sleeping better as well on a day to day and night to night basis.
Week three arrived, and I was in my stride, I felt better in all aspects of my day to day goings on. I had shed about 10 pounds at this point, which I attributed mostly to water weight due to the high salt content of a fast food diet. But I was staying the course. I had a renewed vigor for everything and a thirst to see how far I could really go.
By the end of the forth week however, I had come to a plateau. My body was used to the workouts, as well as the meal plan. The dramatic weight loss had stalled and I felt like I was moving the same amount of metal in the gym. Bernice counseled me closely and we came up with a plan to revamp everything I was doing going into the middle of the challenge.
For week five I started a carb cycle diet, and my workout plans went from rough to downright wicked. But I loved it! I loved the full on assault I was given and my body responded in astronomical fashion! The carb cycle diet was giving me everything I needed to fuel those intensely long and insane workouts. Weeks six and seven followed suit, I got stronger, faster and leaner. Again, I found my stride, and committed to give every ounce of sweat to the iron, and every ounce of obedience to the guidelines Bernice had drawn out for me.
Coming into the closing weeks of the 12 week challenge I started to throw in one HIIT workout a week to shock my body away from the edge of another plateau. I kept the length of my workout the same but I increased weight, or reps and shortened my rest periods between different exercises. The results over the back half of the carb cycle diet coupled with the new workout regimen tallied up to a remarkable 30 total pounds lost over 12 weeks, and sizeable gains in my chest, arms, and core strength. I don’t think my results would have been as dramatic without Bernice’s guidance and planning. She tells me I did all the work, and that’s partly true, but she saved me from myself without question. And for that, I will never be able to repay her, or thank her enough!
Bernice was so positive and organized. She sets you up to help you reach your goals. My journey was a bumpy road, but she was there every step of the way and pushed me and never waned from her positivity. Even though I am no longer a part of her challenges, I still use her tips or workout combos in my daily life. I lost 18 pounds in 12 weeks while working and keeping a busy life. Did my Glutes that Salute Challenge
At the start of my challenge I weighed 138lbs, and was slender, but felt “skinny fat”. I was always in the gym, and just never making any progress. I was guessing at my macros, and felt completely lost diet wise. Now 1 week removed from the challenge, I am sitting at 132 lbs, and eating more nutrient full foods, even POP TARTS PEOPLE!
The idea of having 4 Phases to this challenge was genius. It didn’t matter what your fitness level was, each phase prepared you for the next upcoming phase. The workouts evolved seamlessly. I was already committed to the gym, and yet I got my butt kicked week in and week out! I have never incorporated Tri-sets, or Giant Sets, and NEVER attempted a Century Set! I am proud to say I hung in there like a champ! The exercises were extremely easy to follow, and to alter to your needs. Images and YouTube links were provided so that you could ensure correct form and execution.
I believe I benefitted from the Meal plan most of all. Like I said I was in the gym daily, but just wasn’t seeing any progress. The meals were broken up by macro totals Protein, Carbs, and Fats. You literally just had to plug in what you felt like eating. The Recipes provided made it even more fool proof! I love the Turkey Meatballs!!!! So super easy to make in bulk, and full of flavor. I was getting my nutrients from whole foods as opposed to bars, and prepackaged snacks. I hate to admit it, but I am a lazy meal prepper. If it takes more than 5 ingredients, or more than a few minutes to prepare, I tend to find a short cut. You will see for yourself that any recipe provided is quick and painless, without costing you savory flavor. My sister also modified the Pumpkin Waffles to be Pumpkin protein cookies, and let me tell you my taste buds were SINGING!
I mentioned POP TARTS earlier… this was a weekly occurrence. These girls knew I was struggling with muscle mass on my lower body. They suggested I start to implement a single Pop Tart, immediately after training my legs, to ensure I was getting the most benefit out of my training. Let me tell you, not only did this satisfy my treat cravings, it really helped build and retain my efforts in my legs and glutes. Before the challenge I would not eat anything after training, in fear of ruining the work I just did. THIS WAS JUST NOT THE CASE!!!!!! My tummy, glutes, and legs are so grateful to Bernice and April!!!!!
The one aspect I know I still need to work on, and I am sure I am not the only one, is learning to keep my “cheat meals” to just ONE MEAL!! I have a tendency to overdo it on the cheats. Being a Diabetic, and having a bout of low blood sugar, makes you crave any and every kind of food. So for the Glutes That Salute Holiday Challenge this will be my goal. Really try to hone in on the self-control and maybe just plan for that meal a little better. Eating with friends and family can be difficult. Some may judge, or tempt you to go overboard, and it’s at that time when you really need to ask yourself “What is important”, “Why am I choosing this lifestyle”, and for me that will be an easy way to bring me back to reality. I’M NOT ONLY DOING THIS FOR ME BUT, I’M DOING THIS FOR THOSE AROUND ME, WHO DEPEND ON ME… WHO LOVE ME, AND WHO NEED ME HERE, AND HEALTHY.
Please understand that this program, and these two women, have literally changed my lifestyle. I can honestly say that everything I’ve taken from this challenge will stay with me for life!!!!!! April and Bernice, thank you from the bottom of my heart!!!!!!
